Upside Energy Limited (UPSIDE)

02.03.2018

Upside Energy was founded in 2014 to address the challenges of integrating distributed energy
resources onto the electricity grid. It is building a Virtual Energy Store – a cloud service that
coordinates large numbers of small devices such as uninterruptible power supplies, home energy storage systems, electric vehicles, heating and hot water systems, and uses the aggregated load and energy storage capabilities of these systems to provide balancing services to TSOs, DSOs and Energy Suppliers.

Main Task within the EU-SysFlex project

Upside will provide expertise on the issues of integrating large numbers of small devices into an
aggregated service and on presenting this service to entities such as TSOs, DSOs and Energy
Suppliers. This expertise will address issues such as the challenges of building data capture, analysis
and exchange platforms to accommodate massive scale and high throughput; issues of security and
privacy arising from handling such data volumes; typical use cases that can be addressed using the
flexibility inherent within large numbers of small, distributed loads; business models for exploiting
this flexibility; and the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to maximise the
flexibility and value which can be delivered from a portfolio of demand side assets.
