Helen Ltd. is the energy company operating in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Helen generates
electricity, district heating and cooling for its customers (over 400 000) at its own power plants
located in Helsinki. In addition, the company acquires electricity through its power assets. Helen both produces and retails energy in all the aforementioned forms to industrial and residential customers. In addition to energy production and trading, Helen actively develops and brings to market new energy-related innovative services for customers, including:

  • Solar power plants and solar production as a service (for industry and private customers)
  • Battery energy storage and (for industry and private customers)
  • Public and private electric transport charging network
  • Home automation
  • Demand response

Battery energy storage functionality as a service Helen Electricity Network, the Helsinki area DSO, is a fully owned subsidiary of Helen Ltd.

Main Task within the EU-SysFlex project

Demonstration of market integration of flexible resources to TSO markets through DSO connected
assets

  • Development of DSO ancillary markets and communication to support the integration of flexible
    loads
  • Demonstration of demand response value chain with different real-life resources that include:
  • Multi-scale BESS aggregation and service provision for DSO and TSO needs
  • Solar power plants service provision for DSO needs
  • AMR heating load control through DSO-enabled service
  • Smart electric heating loads aggregation and service provision to TSO needs
  • EV charging demand response for TSO ancillary markets
  • Evaluation of new market and business models based on demonstration experiences
