3rd year celebration of the EU-SysFlex project and General Assembly online

Despite a turbulent year due to the ongoing pandemic, partners of the EU-SysFlex project met last week online to discuss the project’s development. Representatives of 34 partner organizations discussed all of the important results, but also the challenges faced during the 3rd year of the H2020 project. As this year’s  General Assembly was initially planned to be held in Paris, project partners were greeted by the EDF R&D Deputy Director Carmen Muñoz. Liam Ryan, Chief Innovation & Planning Officer at EirGrid, Ireland’s TSO, delivered closing remarks of the meeting. Project partners presented a new project video focused on the demonstrations within the EU-SysFlex at the meeting as well.

EU-SysFlex is a Horizon 2020-funded project which addresses challenges of the European Union to deliver at least 50% of its electricity consumption from renewable sources of electricity by identifying and demonstrating new types of system and flexibility services.

The project aims to identify the long-term needs as well as the technical scarcities of the future power system. EU-SysFlex is working to incentivize necessary flexibility and solutions to enhance the market and regulatory framework. This includes making practical improvements across all system sectors.

Over the past year, project partners submitted 17 deliverables, from which the public reports are available on the project website (“Documents”).  Among others, the list of published outputs includes: Exploitation of power flexibilities from distribution networks: the importance of simulations: Outcomes from Task 6.3 and Description of data exchange use cases based on IEC 62559 methodology . Moreover, project partners submitted the second official report to the European Commission, with the Technical review meeting taking place in July 2020.

In January 2020, Eu-SysFlex partner innogy attended the 3rd Modellers’ Exchange Workshop of the PAC project and presented the EU-SysFlex project and the German demonstrator. After the situation with the spread of COVID-19 got worse, EU-SysFlex representatives continued to represent the project at important industrial events such as EUSEW 2020, InnoGrid 2020 and RGI digital workshop.

EU-SysFlex dissemination activities included organization of a high-level Stakeholder event in the European Parliament to discuss the future EU power system and how a higher share of renewables can be integrated. Moreover, during the spring of 2020, EU-SysFlex partners organized four project webinars, recordings of all of them are published on the project website:

  1. Technical Shortfalls for Pan-European Power System with High Levels of Renewable Generation
  2. Financial Implications of High Levels of Renewables on the European Power System
  3. Conceptual market organisations for the provision of innovative system services: role models, associated market designs and regulatory frameworks
  4. Impact analysis of market and regulatory options through advanced power system and market modelling studies

In the following months, EU-SysFlex project will continue to develop new outputs in order to produce a long-term roadmap of actions for Europe to facilitate the large-scale integration of new technologies and capabilities. Project partners will organise further project webinars and other activities about which we will inform you in our project newsletters.

EU-SysFlex is funded by the EU framework program for research and innovation, Horizon 2020, under the call H2020-LCE-2016-2017.
